This article demonstrates how to recover missing user interface (UI) elements in GeoStudio.
Cause
- The screen coordinates of GeoStudio UI elements are recorded in the Registry.
- If your display setting change significantly, these coordinates may no longer be valid.
- Significant changes include (among others):
- A different display configuration (accessing the computer via remote desktop).
- Changing the display resolution.
- Changing the number or orders of displays.
- Accidentally disabling or moving UI elements off-screen.
Before You Start
- This article assumes you are using the latest version of GeoStudio.
Steps to Resolve
- The GeoStudio 'Window' menu contains a command to reset the program to the default window layout.
- If the menu bar is the missing UI element, the steps can be performed with the keyboard shortcuts.
- Launch GeoStudio normally.
- Open the 'Window' menu (shortcut: Alt + W).
- Select 'Reset Window Layout' (shortcut: E).
- You will then be asked if you want to reset to the default window layout:

- Click on 'Yes'.
- GeoStudio UI elements will be restored.
Some GeoStudio user interface elements are not reset by the in-program reset command. If this is the case, you will need to use the registry editor to clear these settings.
- Run the registry editor. This requires administrative access to the computer. To be safe, you should back-up the registry before proceeding.
- Navigate to the registry entry: Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\GEO-SLOPE
- Find the sub-folder for your version of GeoStudio.
- Different user interface elements have their settings stored in different sub folders. You can delete the entire sub folder for your GeoStudio version and the software will re-create them on next launch. You may lose your recent file list and some other settings if you delete the entire folder. You can also delete the specific sub-folders where the settings are stored:
- General
- GeoWorkspace...
- View3D
- Re-launch GeoStudio.
Things to Consider
- Older versions of GeoStudio may use different keyboard shortcuts.
- If the shortcuts listed above do not work, try Alt + W followed by S.
